Featured Business: A Taste Above
The Pocket Greenhaven Community Association’s featured business is A Taste Above, join us as we get to know its co-owner and manager Rich Wong:
Devin: Hi Rich, thanks for sitting down with me at your restaurant at Promenade Shopping Center, across from Bel Air. You’ve got a diverse menu, tell me about your inspirations …
Rich: Basically, I asked a lot of neighbors, what do you think is needed? They told me, something homemade, something unique, that we don’t have to travel miles and miles to get. In the beginning, we tried to please everyone, it was rough. But we were able to focus in on an Asian-fusion menu, with an island flair that really worked for the neighborhood. We’ve streamlined our service and have been getting the food out faster. Thankfully people gave us a second chance and people have been really enjoying it. We picked up a couple of big catering accounts with ACC and Bank of America. It’s humbling. People have choices, we understand that, so it’s humbling when people choose us.
Devin: The Garcia Bend Mi is my personal favorite, what other dishes are popular? How about something unique you know everyone would love if they gave it a try?

Derek: I am! I love Greenhaven. I grew up here and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. I managed multiple restaurant in the past 20 years. I’m living downtown, but own a home in the neighborhood where family lives. My hobbies are eating and wine tasting.
Devin: It’s a wonderful neighborhood! One of the few complaints I hear are not enough restaurants, so we’re glad you set up here. What are the inspirations for your restaurant?

Featured Business: Mattress Express
The Pocket Greenhaven Community Association’s featured business is Mattress Express Sacramento, join us as we get to know its owner and manager Brianna Fischer:
Devin: Hi Brianna, thanks for sitting down with me at your store near Bel Air! We’re surrounded by dozens of comfy looking mattresses, but tell me about your business …
Brianna: We have brand name mattresses at a fraction of the price of big box stores, but we also have couches and bedrooms sets as well. I have been here about a year and a half. Everything is about 50-80 percent of retail. I used to work for Sleep Train which was an amazing experience and great company but they are no longer here. I have all the same great product but without the overhead it allows me to reduce my prices by 50-80%.
Devin: What got you into Mattresses? How is the business going?

Featured Business: Riverside Sports Bar
The Pocket Greenhaven Community Association’s Featured Business is Riverside Sports Bar, join us as we get to know its owner Jay Jugoz:
Devin: Hey Jay, glad we were finally able to sit down and chat. My wife and I have enjoyed many a burger and football game here over the last couple years. The bourbon glazed burger is my personal favorite and the fries that come with it are a uniquely tasty treat. And, of course, it all tastes better served alongside a local craft beer, speaking of which, that New Helvetia Citra or Bust is calling my name. What is your favorite thing on the menu?
Jay: The bourbon burger is my favorite too. It’s been our flagship since the day we opened. I had a personal hand with the recipe.
Devin: I guess that explains why you like it so much. And great job! What makes this place special in your mind?

PGCA calls for improvements in RT service proposal
The Pocket-Greenhaven Community Association has called on the RT Board of Directors to ensure staff revises the proposed changes to coverage in the Pocket-Greenhaven community, ensuring wider coverage throughout the neighborhood.
We understand the need to streamline lightly used routes and appreciate the effort to increase connection through a common hub for ongoing routes.
We are concerned, however, that the proposed location of that hub (at the intersection of Florin and Greenhaven, near Lake Crest Village) unnecessarily limits coverage throughout the community and creates a safety hazard at an already over burdened intersection. The existing partial-hub at Promenade Shopping Center ensures wider coverage, providing service at a much safer, more pedestrian friendly location.
We appreciate RT staff’s outreach, providing an information and feedback session at our January membership meeting and are optimistic staff will use the community feedback provided to produce a revised plan that more efficiently provides improved service for our community and the entire region.
We are grateful for the dozens of community members who provided feedback and for Supervisor Kennedy and Councilmember Jennings’ ongoing leadership on these important issues.
Featured Business: Ya Taekwondo
The Pocket Greenhaven Community Association’s Featured Business is iYa Taekwando, join us as we get to know its owner Xai Lor:
Devin: Thank you for taking the time to tell us about iYa Taekwando. Can you tell us a little about the school?
Xai: iYa Taekwondo is the Greenhaven Pocket’s Taekwondo School. There is a great sense of family with the students and parents because everyone knows everyone. The saying, “it takes a village to raise a child,” well, we are doing that. I like to believe that iYa Taekwondo is one of the pillars of the foundation of discipline for some of our children in this area. My team and I are serious about our duties to our students and parents. We teach our students to be courteous, respectful, work harding, have self-discipline, be courageous in the face of oppression or obstacle and stay focus on one’s goals. It’s the iYa way of life. We live by it and we teach it.
